US stock markets closed higher yesterday, with the DOW closing above 43,000 for the first time. CNBC

Some Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) aid to North Carolina was paused yesterday; reports of violent threats against FEMA workers have been circulating, and one man with a riffle was arrested. The threats appear to be driven by misinformation circulating about efforts to get aid to those hit by Hurricane Helene. Morning Brew

The latest data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that the number of American adults stepping down from long-term careers is increasing. In 2024, the total percentage of employees aged 25 and over who had been with their current employer for 10 years or more fell to just 30.2% - down 3% from a decade prior.  Some of the acceleration could be attributed to the pandemic, when the “Great Resignation” saw a record 47 million American workers quit their jobs in 2021. The consumer price index, a broad gauge measuring the costs of goods and services across the U.S. economy, increased 0.2% for the month, putting the annual inflation rate at 2.4%. Both readings were 0.1 percentage point above the Dow Jones consensus. Excluding food and energy, core prices increased 0.3% on the month, putting the annual rate at 3.3%. Both core readings also were 0.1 percentage point above forecast. CNBC

Private companies added 143,000 jobs in September, an acceleration from 103,000 in August and better than the 128,000 consensus forecast, ADP reported Wednesday. CNBC

Rescue crews continue searching for survivors for fifth day as confirmed death toll from Hurricane Helene rises to at least 150 people across six states. Helene, combined with other storms, dumped over 40 trillion gallons of rain on the Southeast US in five days—enough to fill 60 million Olympic-sized swimming pools. 1410

A shelter-in-place ordered was issued for residents east of Atlanta as a massive smoke plume lingers from a factory fire on Sunday at a chlorine plant in Conyers, about 25 miles southeast of downtown Atlanta. 1410

The strike is underway by unionized dockworkers at major East and Gulf coast ports, and each day that passes could result in a $3.8 billion–$4.5 billion hit to the economy, according to a JPMorgan analysis. Axios

The three major averages closed just above the flatline on Wednesday: the S&P 500 rose just 0.01%, the Nasdaq Composite added 0.08%, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 0.09%. CNBC

Americans might soon be able to bet on the outcome of the 2024 congressional elections — and potentially other federal elections. A federal appeals court rejected an effort by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission to bar the commodities exchange KalshiEx from offering “Congressional Control Contracts.” CNBC

U.S. job creation (nonfarm payroll) totaled 254,000 in September, coming in much better than the expected 150,000. The unemployment rate fell from 4.2% to 4.1%. CNBC

The port strike has ended as the International Longshoremen’s Association and the United States Maritime Alliance have agreed to a tentative deal on wages. The two sides have extended their existing contract through January 15th to provide time to negotiate a new contract. CNBC

The death toll from Hurricane Helene has surpassed 200 people across six states as crews continue searching for survivors in remote areas one week after Helene struck the US. Roughly 900,000 people remain without power, and tens of thousands without running water. 1410

Only 2% of the homes hit by Hurricane Helene in Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina had an insurance policy protecting them against catastrophic flooding. Morning Brew
